One of the most recurring subjects to deal with in the study of the Qur’an is that of Judgment Day, Earth, and Hell – all of which touch on mankind’s inevitable fate of facing our Creator for the deeds we have done and the paths we have taken.

7:187 They ask you regarding the Hour: “When will be its time?” Say: “Its knowledge is with my Lord, none can reveal its coming except He. It is heavy through the heavens and the earth; it will not come to you except suddenly.” They ask you, as if you are responsible for it! Say: “Its  knowledge is with God, but most of the people do not know.”

This article will attempt to assemble the verses that deal with these various topics, drawing a picture – grim as it may be – of what lies ahead for us all.

Judgment Day Events

The end of our time on Earth, as a species, is associated with a single Day when God will call us all to account. There are many events described in the Qur’an that will occur on that Day – a Day of true terror – that we ask God to spare us and our progeny being alive during its events:

1. Earthquakes will rock the planet, and lava will spew forth from the belly of the Earth.

99:1-5 When the earth rumbles and shakes. And the earth brings out its mass. And man will say: “What is wrong with her?” On that Day it will inform its news. That your Lord had inspired her to do so.

2. The terror of that Day will cause women to miscarriage, mothers to leave their suckling child, and children to go white haired.

22:1-2 O people, be aware of your Lord, for the quaking of the Hour is a terrible thing. The moment you see it, every nursing mother will leave her suckling child, and every pregnant one will miscarry, and you will see the people drunk while they are not drunk, but the retribution of God is most severe.

73:17 So how can you be righteous when you have rejected? A Day which will turn the children white haired!

3. The Sun will expand/overlap.

81:1 When the sun is overlapped.

4. The Moon will crash into the Sun.

75:6-9 He asks: “When is the Day of Resurrection?” So, when the sight is dazzled; and the moon collapses; and the sun and the moon are joined together.

5. The sky will be torn.

69:15-16 On that Day the unavoidable event will come to pass. And the sky will be torn, and on that Day it will be flimsy.

6. The seas will boil.

81:6 And when the seas are made to boil.

7. The mountains will be completely destroyed.

20:105-106 And they ask you about the mountains, so say: “My Lord will annihilate them completely. Then He will leave it as a smooth plain.”

8. All human towns, cities, villages will be destroyed – the Earth will no longer be the Earth we know.

17:58 And there is not a town before the Day of Resurrection that We will not destroy it, or punish it with a severe punishment. This has been written in the record.

18:7-8 We have made what is on the earth an adornment for them, so that We will test them as to which of them is best in works. And We will surely make what is on it completely barren.

14:48 The Day the earth is replaced with another earth, as are the heavens, and they will appear before God, the One, the Supreme.

9. The Horn is blown.

39:68 And the horn will be blown, whereupon everyone in the heavens and the earth will be struck unconscious, except those spared by God. Then it will be blown another time, whereupon they will all rise up, looking.

10. The dead will be resurrected.

36:51-52 And the horn will be blown, whereupon they will rise from the graves massing towards their Lord. They will say: “Woe to us! Who has resurrected us from our resting place? This is what the Almighty had promised; and the messengers were truthful!”

11. God and His angels will descend to Earth.

69:16-17 And the heaven will be torn, and on that Day it will be flimsy. And the angels will be on its borders; and the Throne of your Lord will be carried, above them on that Day, by eight.

89:21-22 Alas, when the earth is pounded into rubble. And your Lord comes with the angels row after row

12. All people will be called to account.

39:69 And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record will be placed, and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought forth; and it will then be judged between them with the truth, and they will not be wronged.

13. The wicked will be held in shackles.

40:71-72 When the shackles will be around their necks and in chains they will be dragged off. To the boiling water, then in the Fire they will be burned.

14. A barrier is struck between the wicked and the righteous.

7:46-47 And between them is a barrier, and on the elevated platform are men who recognized others by their features. And they called out to the dwellers of the Paradise: “Peace be upon you!” They have not yet entered it, but they are hoping. And when their eyes are turned towards the dwellers of the Fire, they say: “Our Lord, do not place us with the wicked people!

15. The resurrected bodies cannot escape pain nor will taste the relief of death.

4:56 Those who have rejected Our revelations, We will admit them to a Fire. Every time their skins are cooked, We replace them with other skins that they may taste the retribution. God is Noble, Wise.

14:17 He tries to drink it, but it cannot be swallowed, and death comes to him from everywhere, but he will not die; and from behind him is a powerful retribution.

16. The righteous are carried away to a paradise spanning the size of our heavens and Earth - wherein they will have eternal bliss. e the relief of death.

19:72 Then We will save those who were righteous, and We will leave the wicked in it on their knees.

57:21 You shall race towards forgiveness from your Lord, and a Paradise whose width is as the width of the heaven and the earth, prepared for those who believed in God and His messengers. Such is the grace of God that He bestows upon whoever He wills. God is the Possessor of Infinite Grace.

56:27-33 And those on the right, who will be with those on the right? In lush orchards. And fruit-trees which are ripe. And extended shade. And flowing water. And many fruits. Neither ending; nor disallowed.

76:13-21 They are reclining in it on raised couches, they do not have in it excessive sun nor bitter cold. And the shade is close upon them, and the fruit is hanging low within reach. And they are served upon with bowls of silver and glasses of crystal. Crystal laced with silver, measured accordingly. And they are given to drink in it from a cup which has the scent of ginger. A spring therein which is called ‘Salsabeel.’ And they are encircled with eternal children. If you see them you will think they are pearls which have been scattered about.  And if you look, then you will see a blessing and a great dominion. They will have garments of fine green silk, and necklaces and bracelets from silver, and their Lord will give them a cleansing drink.

17. The wicked will be in Hell.

19:72 Then We will save those who were righteous, and We will leave the wicked in it on their knees.

89:23 And Hell on that Day is brought. On that Day man will remember,

56:51-55 “Then you, O rejecting strayers, Will eat from the tree of Bitterness, Filling your bellies therefrom, Then drinking on top of it boiling water, So you will drink like thirsty camels!”

56:41-44 And those on the left, who will be from those on the left? In fierce hot winds and boiling water. And a shade that is unpleasant. Neither cool, nor helpful.

18. Hell is guarded by stern angels who do not permit any escape.

66:6 O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones. Guarding it are stern and powerful angels who do not disobey God in what He commanded them; and they carry out what they are commanded to.

In the events of Judgment Day, what is most revealing and frightening is that Hell is not a distant place to which the criminals will be herded, but is the reality of our Earth transforming into the stuff of nightmares – a place where the wicked will be stranded – as long as the heavens and Earth are standing, while the righteous will be taken away.

It is this new reality that sheds light on many of the verses in the Qur’an that deal with the subject, the foremost of which is that “all mankind will enter Hell”:

19:71-72 And every single one of you will be in it. This for your Lord is a certainty that will come to pass. Then We will save those who were righteous, and We will leave the wicked in it on their knees.

According to the Qur’an, our lush green planet, will be transformed into a barren, barely habitable wasteland - where the sun has expanded, the sky has torn, the mountains have been crushed, lava is gushing from the belly of the Earth, the seas have become too hot to sustain life, there are barely any places to take shelter in, nor is there any abundant shade – it is a miserable, desolate place where there is only suffering, hardship, and pain.

It is this reality that also changes the way we must all look at Heaven and Hell as well as our relationship with God. Our Lord is not out to extract revenge on His creation by throwing us in the pits of Hellfire if we do not obey Him! Rather, He has given us a life-line for which we can save ourselves and our loved ones from the inevitability of our planet dying, and us being eternally alive in a living terror. It is this mercy that God has offered us (salvation) that we must qualify to meet.

God will not save the arrogant, wicked, selfish, unthankful who serve others besides Him…Rather, He will save the kind, humble, generous, and thankful who acknowledge Him and only Him as the One true Lord and Master.

May God shield us and our progeny from the horrors of the inevitable Day…
