The Smoke Prophecy – December 21st 2012?

While watching a recent History channel documentary (part-1, part-2) regarding the Mayan calendar and its end date of December 21st 2012, I could not help but draw parallels with certain prophetic pronouncements contained within the Qur’an of things yet to come.

Mayan Calendar

The Mayan’s of South America were perhaps one of the most advanced civilizations when it came to astronomy and the mapping of the celestial movement of the stars and our planet. In-fact, the Mayan calendar is so accurate that it has been able to predict lunar and solar eclipses thousands of years in advance based on a complex interlocking system involving lunar-solar-and star movements.

Interestingly enough, the Mayan calendar comes to an end on December 21st 2012 (the day of winter solstice). Now, while some people are speculating that this may mark the end of the world, others are speculating more reasonably that it will mark the end of the current sun-earth-galaxy synchronization and that a new synchronization will begin.

I find this second interpretation to be more logical, especially when we consider that God has told us that our sun is not stationary, but is constantly moving towards a determined point and is by default taking us with it:

36:38 And the sun runs to a specific destination, such is the design of the Noble, the Knowledgeable.

Pole Shift / Magnetic Reversal

Now, what is causing some anxiety regarding the end of the Mayan cycle is the expectation that either a Pole Shift or Geomagnetic Reversal may take place on this date due to the Earth being in a specific alignment with our planets and the center of the galaxy that will have a gravitational impact on its current structure. While the Pole Shift theory is less plausible (the idea that the pole will shift its axis from its current location), the Geomagnetic Reversal is widely accepted as scientific fact noting that the Earth seems to have performed at least 171 magnetic reversals to date (the flip of the earth’s magnets with north becoming south and vice versa).

In fact, the reversal of the magnetic poles is so normal in our universe that the sun does a magnetic flip every 11 years (see NASA article on subject).

Coincidently, the next flip for our sun is expected in the year 2012 and is anticipated to be accompanied by some of the strongest solar flares seen for decades:

This week researchers announced that a storm is coming--the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). "The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one," she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958. (source)

Overall, it seems that both the scientific and astronomy evidence supports some events occurring around 2012, the extent of which seems to be unknown and unclear.

The Smoke Prophecy

One of the most interesting prophecies found in the Qur’an is that of the “smoke” which will encompass all of humankind as a punishment/retribution for what we have done:

44:1 HM.

44:2 And the clarifying Scripture.

44:3 We have sent it down in a blessed night. Surely, We were to warn.

44:4 In it, is a decree for every matter of wisdom.

44:5 A decree from Us. Surely, We were to send messengers.

44:6 A mercy from your Lord. He is the Hearer, the Knowledgeable.

44:7 The Lord of the heavens and the Earth, and everything between them. If you were certain!

44:8 There is no god except Him. He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your ancestors.

44:9 No; they are in doubt, playing.

44:10 Therefore, watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.

44:11 It will envelop the people: “This is a painful retribution!”

44:12 “Our Lord, remove the retribution from us; we are believers.”

44:13 How is it that now they remember, while a clarifying messenger had come to them?

44:14 But they turned away from him and said: “Clearly educated, but crazy!”

44:15 We will remove the retribution in a while; you will then revert back.

It has been hypothesized that the smoke was the nuclear weapons launched at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while it has also been hypothesized that the smoke was the burning oilfields from the 1991 Gulf war. Of course, neither of these events fit the criteria since the Qur’an has told us that this even will encompass all people (not just a geographic area or people).

Looking at what may cause smoke to spread across the entire world, we have a few scenarios to look at:

  1. Global nuclear war
  2. Meteor striking Earth causing great dust clouds
  3. Volcanic eruptions (super volcanoes) shooting out ash and soot.

Option 1 can be discounted as not being in-line with the Quran’s description which seems closer to a natural phenomena than a man-made event.

Options 2 & 3 are both plausible.

Supervolcano

With regards to the possibility of the eruption of a supervolcano or a number of volcanoes causing the prophesized smoke, there have already been increasing reports of underground activity at the largest known supervolcano on Earth (Yellowstone)  where the crust has risen 13cm in the past 10 years.

An interesting documentary has been made on this subject (see link) looking at the effects of the eruption of such a natural phenomena and its impact on a global scale.

December 21st – The Night of Decree

What makes the Mayan date even more significant is that the night of the winter solstice (December 21st) has been found to be the “Night of Decree” in which the Qur’an was revealed and in which God’s major decrees are delivered.

If there was ever a single day to be chosen where God’s punishment would be delivered to mankind, then that indeed is the day. Also, it is interesting to note that sura 44 where the prophecy of the smoke is mentioned begins by speaking about the “Night of Decree” in which the Qur’an was revealed 44:3-4 (coincidence?).

Israel and Prophecy

Another element which lends weight to the events of the smoke and destruction occurring in our lifetime is the creation of the state of Israel which occurred officially in 1948 and the undying support it has continued to receive from Western nations, especially the USA.

The Qur’an has prophesized that the Children of Israel will all gather in one place and be more influential and powerful than ever before (see 17:104), but more importantly, the Qur’an has also prophesized that this gathering of Israel will be corrupt in the eyes of God and unacceptable to Him, hence the power and might of this gathering will be vanquished (see 17:7).

For such prophecy to come true, it is safe to assume that the nations that have supported Israel and continued to fund and arm its evil actions will no longer be in a position to do so…Such lack of support can only occur of these nations themselves are preoccupied with their own survival and have no time to worry about the survival of a nation thousands of miles away…Or, it may be that such nations cease to exist altogether as the will of God is put into effect.

Next Steps

The scientific and supporting evidence for an event occurring on December 21st 2012 seems to have a high probability of being actually true, if so, then such warnings should be taken seriously and plans should be made for the protection of one’s self, family, and community.

1. Have a plan for the event.

Look at a map of fault lines and volcanoes, and make sure your plan involved being as far away from both as physically possible.

Also, regarding the duration of such event, it could take anywhere from 1 to 3 years before the volcanic ash has cleared from the atmosphere (depending of which sites you look at), therefore, your plan should factor such length of time and have the ability to access drinking water, food, and medicines for such a period.

2. Have a plan for after the event.

If this event does indeed take place, and if you have been able to survive its duration, then you need to know what you will do afterwards and where you will go.

If countries and governments fall, and if people are wiped out in masses due to the event itself as well as the famine and diseases that may follow, then you will need to think of where people can gather and function once again as intelligent societies.

May God guide us to what is right...
